Kampala City Tours: What You Can Do on a Kampala City Tour

Kampala city was built on the foundations of nature, as evidenced by its name, which means the Hill of Impalas. This city is a combination of seven major hills. Known to have inhabited the popular impalas due to their loose vegetation. These hills have significantly aided in the transformation of the current city. Kampala City is administratively divided into 5 divisions. Including the Central Division, the Rubaga Division in the West, the Makindye Division in the South, the Nakawa Division in the East, and the Kawempe Division in the North. A tour of this beautiful city is the genesis of all other adventures in the Pearl of Africa. Offering an extraordinary experience to visitors and keeping them entertained.

History of Kampala City’s establishment

Originally, Kampala was established during the era of the Imperial British East African Company by Captain Fredrick Lugard. The first capital was headquartered at Old Kampala Hill, where he built Fort Lugard just in proximity to Mengo, the capital of the Buganda Kingdom. This was a strategy by the company to advance British control over the Nile. Lugard formalized Kampala as the capital of Uganda and a protectorate. Shortly after the British’s complete claim over the land, the capital was transferred to Entebbe. Where Kampala remained the communications, industrial, and commercial centre. In 1962, during Uganda’s advancement to independence, the capital was again relocated back to Kampala.

Activities on a Kampala City Tour

Kampala city walk

This is one of the most fantastic ways to explore what the capital has to offer. Several walking trails can lead you from uptown to the chaotic and dramatic business traffic of downtown. It takes about 2 to 3 hours to walk through the business centre. The crowded local markets, key monuments around the city, and other tourism-key destinations, such as religious sites around the busy city.

Visiting cultural and historical sites

Cultural and historical sites are among the most memorable tourist encounters on a Kampala city tour. There are numerous sites to visit, including the Buganda Trail and museums. The Buganda Kingdom is acknowledged for being the most organized East and Central African monarchy, standing as a model for many other traditional colleagues within the region. Among the cultural trials to undertake in Kampala are the royal mile trial. Including Mengo palace, Bulange/Buganda parliamentary building and Kasubi tombs (Kampala’s most famous site and a UNESCO site). This tomb was destroyed by a fire in 2011, was reconstructed and is currently open to visitors. Other sites include Fort Lugard at Old Kampala Hill. Which was the first Kampala administrative centre, and the Uganda Museum.

Monument trail walk

Kampala possesses some key monuments for commemoration from different perspectives of Uganda’s history or cultural background. Among the major monuments to visit are the Independence Monument at Nakasero Nile Avenue and the monument for Kabaka Mutesa II, who was once the Buganda king and the first president of Uganda, which is just opposite the Independence Monument. The Queen’s Clock Tower is along Entebbe Road and the other key monument is for Kabaka Mutebi at the Bulange Building in Mengo.

Birding

If you are opting for nature leisure on a Kampala city tour, the birding experience is one of the most rewarding undertakings to consider. Makerere University, one of Africa’s best universities, offers a relaxed natural environment that inhabits a variety of bird species, with the dominance of Marabou stock and over 20 other bird species. Kabaka’s Lake is another thrilling bird-catching destination in Kampala. Additionally, Entebbe Botanical Gardens and many other beaches reward you with a superb birding experience. Some of the other bird species to encounter in Kampala include harmer cops and African grey parrots.

Religious site trail

The religious wars of the 19th century in Uganda made a significant impact on the religious dynamics of the country. In addition to the administrative posts, Kampala houses the headquarters of the major religions in Uganda. There are several significant religious sites with historical backgrounds for the religions in Uganda. Most common are the Bahai Temple, the only temple of its kind in Africa, the Martyr’s Trail, including the Namugongo shrine and museum; Munyonyo shrine, cathedrals of religious exodus in Uganda; and mosques, mostly the Gaddafi Mosque, the biggest in East Africa.

Tasting the local dishes

In many local restaurants, there are higher chances of tasting local dishes, such as matooke, cassava, potatoes, luwombo, or any dish you can inquire about. Trending is the Rolex; Uganda is zabu (gold) just imagine eating your watch. Anyway, the Rolex is a roll of chapati and fried eggs. This is very common and can be found in any corner of Uganda, from street, restaurants, lodge and big hotel

Events and happenings

This can include football matches, especially the Uganda Cranes matches. The most attended event in Kampala is Kabaka’s birthday run. Every April 14, Buganda Kingdom celebrates Kabaka’s birthday, but every run is aimed at soliciting funds to help fight different illnesses, including sickle cell, HIV/AIDS, and fistula, among others. Events and happenings are occasional, and others can include cultural celebrations, in particular the Buganda ceremonies, trade shows, and promotional exhibitions. While in Kampala, first know if there is any occasion you can attend during your Kampala city tour.

Nighttime city walks and clubbing

It’s only in Kampala where parties can’t stop; it’s always party after party. Kampala is known as the most exciting city in East Africa, with a number of clubs that almost party throughout the week. All tour guides in Uganda have a selection of those clubs to suggest for just an overnight, but here it needs some consciousness about hoping to get a girl for a night. Most of these ladies in clubs are thugs and even HIV-positive, so do this at your own risk.

Cultural entertainments

Kampala is a gated city that offers just about everything, among which are entertainment reflections like clubbing, concerts, spots, and open entertainment centers. Almost every day in Kampala is a fine day to go somewhere clubbing. Some of the clubs host live band music, which gives you the feel of real music. There are entertaining spots you can visit, especially for the nightlife. Take a visit to the Ndere cultural center in Ntida, north of Kampala. The Ndere cultural center presents almost all of the traditional dances and songs of Uganda’s indigenous people.
